Captive Reading Ideas – Words

The captive reading strategy is more for children who already read. However, we gave it a shot with my 6-year old when she started blending sounds.
We started with 3-letter words (Box, Cat, Boy…) printed in very big black Arial-font characters on half an A4 sheet, that we stuck up in the loo.

At first, my daughter did not understand why we had stuck this note nor what it said (“Box”). When she asked us, we replied she should use her blending skills to read the note. She picked up the habit of reading these short words with her budding reading skills, and it definitely helped build her self-confidence.
As she grew more comfortable, the length of the words grew too.

Where to get ideas from?
To find ideas of 3-letter (or more) words, I Google searched “3-letter words scrabble” and came up with great lists of simple words a young child can read and relate to.
